Chemical spill closes Middlebelt Road Near 8 Mile Road in Livonia-Farmington Hills border

Officials said the clean-up could take hours

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A hazmat team responded to an acid leak from a tractor-trailer, which shut down the Livonia/Farmington Hills border.

The incident occurred on Monday (May 19) at 5 p.m., and the Farmington Hills Fire Department responded to the tractor-trailer leaking ferric chloride onto the road.

Since the tractor-trailer leaking the acid stopped on Middlebelt Road just south of 8 Mile Road, the Livonia Fire and Rescue Department responded and took command of the incident.

Due to the nature of this hazard, the Western Wayne Hazardous Materials Response Team was activated.

The hazmat technicians on this team are firefighters from the surrounding area, including Farmington Hills.

They wore specialized level A hazmat suits to enter the semi-trailer and stop the leak.

The road remains closed as the trucking company’s cleanup crew works to make it safe for the public. The cleanup effort is expected to take hours.
