MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – A 13-year-old boy has been taken into custody after reportedly breaking into a home and threatening a homeowner with a gun and a hammer.
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 4:17 p.m. in the 3800 block of Section Road in Bedford Township.
Police said the 13-year-old boy was reported to have run away from the residence.
Officials said the boy was last observed heading northbound into a wooded area.
While on scene, police said they initiated a search of the area, and after one hour, around 5:21 p.m., a 911 call was received from a nearby residence in the 7100 block of Twin Canyon Drive.
Officials said the 13-year-old had broken into an outbuilding workshop and threatened the homeowner with a gun.
Police said they quickly arrived on the scene and observed the teen being restrained by the homeowner.
Officials said when they arrived they were able to identify the 13-year-old runaway as the teen that was being searched for.
Investigation revealed that the teen had broken into the workshop, where he confronted the victim who was working inside, held a gun to him, and made threats to shoot him.
The victim attempted to take the handgun from the teen and was able to get it away after a brief struggle, only for the offender to then produce a hammer and swing it at him.
The 13-year-old boy was then held down and restrained by the victim until a family member was able to call 911, and deputies arrived on the scene.
Further investigation revealed that just prior to the break-in and assault, the teen had also committed a home invasion at an additional nearby unoccupied residence in the 7000 block of Brookside Drive.
It was during that home invasion that the teen had stolen the handgun.
The 13-year-old boy was apprehended and lodged at the Monroe County Youth Center on charges of home invasion, breaking and entering, and felonious assault.
His identity is not being released at this time, and he is awaiting authorization of a petition and a preliminary hearing.
Deputies said the case remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Monroe County Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.
