Man fleeing police runs stop sign, causes crash that kills himself, innocent driver in Monroe County
A man driving a truck erratically in the front lawns of Bedford Township residents fled from police Thursday, went through a stop sign, and caused a crash that left him and an innocent driver dead, according to police.

35-year-old man killed in Monroe County single vehicle crash while speeding
Police say the victim, Lambertville resident Nathan James Mahrt, was driving a silver 2020 Nissan 370Z southbound on Douglas Road north of Summerfield Road when the crash happened. MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – A 35-year-old man was killed in a single vehicle crash that happened on Summerfield east of Douglas in Bedford Township at around 3:46 a.m. Saturday. Police say the victim, Lambertville resident Nathan James Mahrt, was driving a silver 2020 Nissan 370Z southbound on Douglas north of Summerfield. While he was making a turn in the area the Nissan went off the roadway to the south. Police say speeding was a contributing factor in the crash.

Monroe County investigating after missing man found dead
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police are investigating a man’s death after the body of a missing man was found in Monroe County Saturday afternoon. According to authorities, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Bedford Township after someone had found a body in the woods. Man, woman hospitalized after attempted murder in Bedford Township, police seek suspects
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted homicide that occurred Tuesday night in Bedford Township. According to authorities, the incident happened at about 10 p.m. at the Bedford Inn Motel on Telegraph Road. Police said the investigation revealed both victims were assaulted at the Bedford Inn Motel the night prior. A search warrant was authored and served by detectives on a motel room at the Bedford Inn Motel, where evidence of an aggravated assault took place. Monroe County hit-and-run, armed robbery suspect arrested after police pursuit into Toledo
TOLEDO – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a string of crimes after a two-state police pursuit Saturday night. Just after 5 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy in Lambertville, just north of Toledo, was informed by a citizen of a damaged black Impala parked at a Rite Aid Pharmacy located near the intersection of Secor and Sterns roads. Deputies pursued the suspect southbound into Toledo, where they turned the pursuit over to the Toledo Police Department, who took the man into custody. He is currently lodged at the Lucas County Jail, pending extradition to Michigan for face charges of armed robbery, felonious assault and more. Ohio woman arrested after Monroe County car crash kills 1, injures 3
The 31-year-old driver of the GMC, a man also from Toledo, Ohio, was reportedly waiting for assistance and had his hazard lights on when his vehicle was struck. Following the crash, the front seat passenger of the Honda Civic -- a 36-year-old woman from Toledo, Ohio -- was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. A third passenger of the Honda Civic -- a 41-year-old woman from Toledo, Ohio -- was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. The woman was not wearing a seat belt during the crash, officials said. The 23-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at the Monroe County Jail.

Drunken driver killed in crash with utility pole in Bedford Township, police say
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Toledo man who was driving drunk and speeding Friday died when his car left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole in Bedford Township, according to police. Officials said David C. Smith, 39, of Toledo, was driving a black 2002 GMC Envoy at 1:08 a.m. Friday on Dean Road east of Crabb Road. Smith was heading east and drove off the north side of Dean Road, striking a mailbox, police said. He got back on the road and continued east before leaving the roadway again, according to authorities. Monroe County medics and Bedford Township firefighters responded, but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Retired fire chief, mother of 4 killed in multiple-car crash in Bedford Township
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A retired fire chief from Bedford Township and a mother of four from Lambertville died in a multiple-car crash on Wednesday afternoon. The man is in critical condition and his wife is in stable condition, police said. Her four children were transported to the hospital and listed in stable condition, officials said. The driver of the third vehicle, a 61-year-old man from Lambertville, was transported to the hospital and listed in stable condition. Officials say it is unknown if excessive speed, alcohol or intoxicating substances were a factor in the crash.

Petition started to remove Bedford school board member Todd Bruning
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A petition and a Facebook group has been started with the goal of recalling Todd Bruning from his position with the Bedford Township School Board. Section 1107 of the Revised School Code states that the Governor may remove a school board member. There is nothing in the law that provides procedures for a school board itself, or any employee of the school board, to remove a board member. Bedford Public School Board members only speak on behalf of the District through formal action at public School Board meetings. The Bedford Public Schools Board of Education does not endorse any statements made by individual Board Members."

Driver killed in head-on crash after crossing center line in Bedford Township, police say
BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A driver was killed Tuesday in a head-on crash after he crossed the center line in Bedford Township, police said. The crash happened at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday on Sterns Road, west of Secor Road, according to Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone. Officials said James L. McGee, 77, of Toledo, Ohio, was driving a 2004 Buick Century east on Sterns Road. He turned left into a private driveway and got back onto Sterns Road, heading east, according to authorities. The Century crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a black 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck that was heading west, police said.
