WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – The death of a cellmate has led to a 40-year sentence for an inmate in Wayne County.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2023, when Claude Lewis fatally assaulted his cellmate, Thomas Carr, while housed inside the Wayne County Jail.

Court documents revealed that Lewis pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder with a sentence agreement of 20 to 40 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).

He will be sentenced on July 11.

On July 13, 2023, Carr suffered critical injuries to his head after the attack by Lewis.

On July 20, 2023, Carr succumbed to his injuries and was taken off life support.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation where criminal charges pended against Lewis, who was originally charged with assault with intent to murder, but was charged with murder in the 1st Degree.

In response to this tragedy, Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington dispatched a WCSO Chaplain to express condolences on his behalf.
