WARREN, Mich. – A young firefighter in Warren is facing scrutiny after posting a photo on social media following a house fire.
In the picture, he is seen standing inside a burned home alongside his lieutenant and teammates.
The fire commissioner stated that the actions were unacceptable and that consequences would follow.
However, he also emphasized that it serves as a teachable moment regarding young workers and their use of social media.
The photo, which was intended to honor the team with the caption “good work boys,” has drawn criticism for its lack of sensitivity toward the homeowner.
The first-alarm fire on Dominic Drive occurred Thursday, June 5, and was contained within 20 minutes, with no injuries reported.
The photo was taken two hours after crews first arrived on the scene.
The fire commissioner noted that many veteran firefighters might view a photo taken at the scene as something to be framed and displayed, but posting it on social media reflects a different mindset, particularly among younger workers.
The photo was quickly removed, and the young firefighter has since apologized for sharing it.
The commissioner is arranging a meeting between the firefighter and the homeowner to address the situation.
Both the young firefighter and his lieutenant are facing disciplinary action, which could range from a write-up to suspension or even termination.
A decision regarding their fate will be made next week.
