Man charged with making false bomb threats to Mount Clemens homeless shelter

Police said the man continued to contact the shelter four more times after the initial threat

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Aramis Marquis Smith, 33, from Detroit, has been charged with reporting false bomb threats to the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team’s (MCREST) building in Mount Clemens.

Police said on June 7, Smith allegedly used a TextNow number to call MCREST and said, “You need to leave; there may be a bomb in the building.”

Officials said two bomb-sniffing K-9 units conducted a search of the MCREST building in Mount Clemens and determined there was no bomb present.

Following the search of the building, police said Smith continued to contact MCREST four more times, saying, “You still are not safe.”

Police said an MCREST staff member recognized Smith’s voice, and the TextNow number was quickly traced back to the 33-year-old man.

Officials said Macomb County Sheriff deputies then arrested Smith while he was sitting across the street from the MCREST building.

After a comprehensive and complete review of the evidence presented by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said they determined to bring the following charges against Smith:

Count 1: False report or threat of terrorism, a felony punishable by up to 20 years.

Count 2: False report or threat of bomb/harmful device, a felony punishable by up to four years.

These are the maximum possible charges available under the law based on the evidence presented to date.

Smith was arraigned in the 41B Mount Clemens District Court, where bond was set at $5,000 cash/surety 10%.

The probable cause conference for Smith is scheduled for June 23, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., with a preliminary exam date to follow.
