GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. – A popular Italian restaurant in Grosse Pointe Woods is losing its doors. Ferlito’s Restaurant announced on social media it will close its Mack Avenue location later this month.
In a statement on social media, owner Joshua Mowen said, “after 10 unforgettable years, we’ve made the incredibly hard decision to close Ferlitos Restaurant. Our last day of service will be Sunday, June 29.” Mowen added, “we have pivoted, adjusted, reimagined, renovated and reinvented ourselves over the years.”
“We have had to navigate a lot. During the pandemic we kept up with the changing cost of goods, we expanded with a catering truck, we maintained higher quality product, having competitive wages for our employees all while keeping pricing affordable for our customers and not cutting corner with quality ingredients,” he said, adding that the building is showing its age and they can’t afford the upkeep.
Mowen took over Ferlito’s in 2015 and dates back to the 1980s. He explained that over the past 10 years, his team has donated and raised $30,000 in food and monetary values to schools, hospitals, police departments, fire departments, churches, animal shelters, charities and other non-profits.
Mowen thanked his customers saying, “to everyone who supported us, laughed with us, cried with us, and even to our haters and critics you’ve made this more than just a place to eat. We appreciate you. You’ve been part of something truly special, and we’ll never forget it.”
The restaurant will continue to operate through the last Sunday of June, then close for good.
“This is not a complete goodbye for Ferlitos we still have a carry out location for you to come see us,” Mowen concluded.
In February, a carryout-only outpost of Ferlito’s opened in St. Clair Shores at 22910 Harper across from Kroger near Nine Mile, and that will continue to serve the brand’s pizza, pasta, ribs and more.
Until its final day on June 29, Ferlito’s is open for dinner Tue.-Sat. and lunch and dinner Sundays at 20745 Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods.
