BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A fire department in Monroe County has issued a warning about a recent scheme in which callers have been posing as fire officials to obtain personal information from residents.
The Bedford Township Fire Department said that scammers are calling residents and saying they are representatives from the department and other agencies.
The callers are then requesting personal information from people, including financial details and Social Security numbers.
“These calls are a scam. The Bedford Fire Department does not call residents to ask for personal or financial information over the phone,” according to a release from the fire department. “Anyone receiving such a call is urged to hang up immediately and not provide any information.”
The fire department also said that residents should record the call if possible.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this scheme should report it to the Federal Trade Commission. They can also contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7400.
This comes as several text, call and email scams circulate around Metro Detroit, including the recent DMV text scam.
A 78-year-old Troy woman was also recently scammed out of more than $8,000, and the suspect showed up at her house to retrieve the money.
