The Fowlerville Police Department released an update about the crash after getting several calls from the community.

“A driver made a reckless and incredibly poor decision to get behind the wheel, traveling at high rates of speed, going off the roadway, and ultimately driving through our local cemetery,” according to the Fowlerville Police Department.

This caused thousands of dollars in damage to village property and to nearly 20 headstones.

Some of those headstones dated back to World War II and were “historic and irreplaceable,” according to the police department.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the damage one bad decision can cause,” police said. “If you feel that you should not be behind the wheel, whether it’s because you’ve had too much to drink, used any kind of drug, or are simply too tired, don’t! Call a friend, a family member, or use a rideshare. Lives and legacies depend on it.”

Police have identified the suspect responsible for driving through the cemetery.

The investigation is ongoing.
