SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The shelter-in-place order has been lifted in Southgate as Jeremiah Christian Kemp, the 20-year-old man who shot two officers, has been captured.
Joe Marsh, Director of Public Safety for the city of Southgate, said Kemp was found hiding in a nearby apartment on Thursday (June 19).
Police said they are still looking for the weapon, causing a search warrant to be given for the apartment where Kemp was hiding.
Marsh said the officers involved are reported to be in stable condition and are in good spirits.
“I’m sure they’re going to like to hear that this shooter is in custody,” said Marsh.
While details about the shooter’s connection to the apartment residents remain unclear, Marsh said the swift response from law enforcement was commendable as the hours-long manhunt finally came to an end.
“We have two police officers just trying to do their job, both injured in the line of duty,” Marsh said.
The police response involved multiple agencies, including federal, state, and local law enforcement.
“This was an incredible partnership,” Marsh said, highlighting the collaboration among various departments.
The arrest of Kemp brought relief to the community as they no longer had to shelter in place.
“It’s a relief that nothing happened to any other police officers trying to apprehend him,” Marsh said.
The search for the weapon continues, with officials urging the public to report any sightings of the weapon.
“If anybody sees the gun, we don’t want them to touch it. Just contact 911,” Marsh said.
The incident began when officers responded to reports of a man waving a gun in the apartment complex.
“It sounds like there was some type of an argument between a couple of people inside the apartment complex,” Marsh said.
As the investigation continues, the community remains grateful for the efforts of law enforcement.
“I was grateful for all the departments that came out and helped us bring this guy into custody,” Marsh said.
