Training offers local elected officials tools for police oversight
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI – An upcoming training will teach local officials how to provide oversight over their police force. The virtual training from CAUTION Group, based in Southgate, is designed to teach officials about their responsibility to provide oversight of their police force, a news release from the company said. This training will provide that ability for local officials. The training is intended as a primer for mayors, council members, city managers and city attorneys, the release said. The training is only available for local elected officials, the release said.

Rapheal Smiley, 32, of Detroit was charged with fraud involving department or agency seals, identity document fraud and trafficking in counterfeit goods. Kierczak is accused of stealing or embezzling authentic COVID-19 vaccination record cards from a Veteran’s Administration hospital -- along with vaccine lot numbers necessary to make the cards appear legitimate—and then reselling those cards and information to individuals within Metro Detroit for $150-$200 each through Facebook. Smiley allegedly ordered fake vaccination cards from China which he advertised for sale over social media. We will continue to investigate these crimes and prosecute them accordingly.”The cases are both being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ryan A. Particka.

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The FBI had asked for tips from people to help identify those involved in the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol Building. Anthony Williams, a man from Southgate, was identified and reported. Police said he likely deleted photos and videos from his Facebook page, but authorities were able to get copies anyway. The tipster even supplied screenshots from William’s Facebook page. The FBI said photos of Williams inside the Capitol Building were deleted and perhaps Williams thought he was in the clear, but investigators were able to retrieve the deleted photos and videos.
Man charged in hit-and-run that killed pregnant woman, unborn child
SOUTHGATE, MI -- A 31-year-old Wyandotte man has been charged in the deaths of a pregnant 35-year-old Southgate woman and her unborn child. A police investigation alleges Alkewich was “intoxicated and driving at a high speed before striking the woman and fleeing” according to a press release from Worthy’s office. Bond was set at $2 million and Alkewich is due back in court on March 26 for a probable cause conference. He was arraigned Tuesday and was charged with failure to stop at scene of an accident resulting in death. Her family knows the arraignment won’t bring her back, but they’re hoping it’s a step in the right direction for the grieving family. It’s believed that over the weekend, Alkewich ran a light and struck Strother, who was crossing the street, and then kept on driving. The court is going to assess a $2 million bond,” said Judge Elisabeth Mullins.

It’s unclear what led to the accident taking place but Johnson said the driver of the vehicle didn’t even try to stop. AdA vigil was held in the exact same place where Jessica was killed, near the intersection of Fort and Superior streets. I didn’t think that it even happened.

But it’s the illegal gun sales in Metro Detroit that are grabbing the attention of ATF agents. Keith Krolczyk is an assistant special agent in charge of ATF Detroit. “There is no shortage of gun violence in Detroit,” Krolczyk said. AdEdwards first got the attention of agents when, according to court documents, he started texting with James Clark from Southgate. Court documents revealed that Clark’s girlfriend would use a Facebook account to post images and short videos to her account showing the different guns for sale.
Michigan man accused of killing wife with shotgun, hiding body
SOUTHGATE, MI – A man is accused of killing his wife and hiding her body before filing a missing persons report earlier this month. The body of 31-year-old Amanda Marie Hilton was found in a field near the Southgate apartment where she lived with her husband, according to a news release from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Ryan Arthur Hilton, 32, is charged with murder, tampering with evidence and felony firearm in the death of his wife. The suspect is accused of then moving the victim’s body to a field with tall grass and leaving her near a dumpster by their apartment. Southgate Police officers located the victim’s body and arrested the suspect on Jan. 5, authorities said.

SOUTHGATE, MI -- The body of a woman reported missing on New Year’s Eve has been found. WXYZ-TV in Detroit reports that the 31-year-old woman was found in a field near an apartment in Southgate on Tuesday morning. Police are at the scene at Lacolonade Apartments near Northline Road and Fordline Street in the Metro Detroit suburb. The woman was found shot to death, and the Southgate Police Department have a person of interest in custody who they say knew the victim, the TV station reported. The victim and person of interest have not been identified.
