The teenager was just three and a half credits shy of graduation. He was caught up in immigration enforcement due to an existing deportation order.
Despite pleas from his school district, teachers, and classmates who asked Ice for a stay so he could complete his diploma, authorities moved forward with his removal.
The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center had been fighting for Maykol’s release.
“Maykol’s case highlights the cruelty of our immigration enforcement system. Our country says it values fairness and wants to protect young people from harm, yet it sent our young client on a harrowing and traumatic ordeal alone.”
