SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Frustration from residents in Springfield Township is growing over a proposal for a sand and gravel mining site.

The Levy Company wants the planning commission to approve it for land along Ormond Road.
Residents said it’s too close to homes and wildlife. Neighbors are planning a protest at the planning commission meeting Tuesday night.
They said their concerns are not just about dust or noise. They are also worried about traffic, water and property values.
The township stated that it is still in the early stages of reviewing the proposal, but residents feel that their leaders are not on their side.
“We want to keep our community safe. We want our environment safe, kids and grandkids safe,” said Stephanie Naha, a resident. “We want to keep the paradise we moved to 25 years ago.”
“Sharing the health consequences of what would come from this mine is imperative,” said Amanda Gruzin, another resident. “Current law only requires notification of people living within 300 feet. I am, unfortunately, one of them. Speaking to our township, they haven’t been transparent and forthcoming.”
Local 4 reached out to the township supervisor. He said he understood the frustration, but “the applicant has a legal right to submit an application, and the planning commission has a duty to review all submitted materials before making any formal recommendation to the township board. This ensures a fair and thorough process for both the applicant and the residents.”
The township said it plans to hire its own experts to look at the impact of noise, traffic and environmental changes.
Residents who want to learn more can attend the planning commission hearing on June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center on Davisburg Road.
The township supervisor said no decision will be made on Tuesday night — it is just a chance to discuss the plan.
