LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – Hamburg Township is one of Michigan’s areas where fireworks are allowed year-round.
Some love the idea of being able to use them 365 days a year, while others believe that it’s best used in moderation.
After being disturbed, a woman who doesn’t want to be on camera recently discovered that pretty much anything goes when it comes to fireworks in Hamburg Township.
“There seemed to be some confusion about when fireworks are actually allowed. So, I actually looked it up myself, and I was utterly shocked to find out that we are so much more flexible than the state law,” said the woman.
Yes, there’s the state law that allows fireworks on certain days of the year. But municipalities have the ultimate say.
“I understand that people want to ignite fireworks on the holidays. I’m not against fireworks. But I certainly don’t see why it would be necessary 365 days out of the year,” the woman said.
Some, however, love the freedom, as seen in Eric Konopka, who owns Michigan Fireworks Company in South Lyon.
“Other people’s hobbies are golf, where they can golf every day of the year if they want. Right? Well, we can do fireworks now every day if the year is inside of our township,” said Konopka.
Konopka also resides in Salem Township, where fireworks are permitted year-round. Yet some are worried about veterans and pets.
“I think we owe our veterans some respect. Especially for those who have PTSD, it’s not helpful to have fireworks more than what we need to,” the woman said.
“I know some people, there’s dogs and animals that don’t like fireworks. But we actually like the art behind it. We also tell people to be mindful of your neighbors. Do them on Friday or Saturday night, where people aren’t working the next day. Try to be respectful,” Konopka said.
Hamburg Township officials were on holiday on Thursday (July 3), so no one could comment on the ordinance.
