Police searching for suspect accused of shooting, injuring 2 in passing vehicle on I-96

DETROIT – Two Detroit men were injured after being shot by someone in a passing vehicle while traveling on I-96 late Tuesday night.

The victims reported to Michigan State Police that they were traveling in the right center lane of eastbound I-96 near Davison and Livernois on July 8, just before 11 p.m., when a vehicle approached them from the right lane, and they heard four shots.

The suspect vehicle continued on, and they lost sight of them along eastbound I-96 and W Grand Boulevard. The group headed to the nearest hospital.

The driver, a 57-year-old Detroit man, had a gunshot wound to the leg. A passenger, a 22-year-old Detroit man, had a gunshot wound to his thigh. Police said the other passenger, a 21-year-old Detroit man, was not hurt.

The freeway was shut down for about four hours as police conducted an investigation and searched for evidence.

“Troopers and canine units did not locate any shell casings or evidence along the freeway,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw on X. “They will continue to look for evidence to locate where the shooting occurred and attempt to determine a suspect, suspect vehicle or motive.
