Storms send tree crashing through Dearborn Heights home, displacing family
Powerful storms ripped through parts of Southeast Michigan Saturday afternoon, leaving a path of downed trees and sending one massive tree crashing through the roof of a family home in Dearborn Heights.
The wind gusts split a tree outside the home of Christine Duncan in two, sending it through her house.
“I was in the family room,” Duncan said. “I got up to look out the window, I came in the kitchen to tell my husband something’s going on, and the tree came crashing down.”
The incident nearly injured her son, who was in his bedroom when the tree split and crashed through the ceiling.
Person killed by family member during argument at Dearborn home, police say
A person was killed by a family member during an argument at a home in Dearborn, police said.
Officers and firefighters were called around 11 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2025, to a home in the 1700 block of Walnut Street.
Police said there was some sort of argument at the home, and one family member was shot and killed by another.
Man dies after falling down elevator shaft of abandoned Detroit hospital, police say
A man has died after falling down an elevator shaft inside an abandoned hospital in Detroit.
A group of people went inside the former Southwest Detroit Hospital building in the 2400 block of 20th Street at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, according to police.
One of them, only identified by police as an adult male, fell down an elevator shaft and died. Police say a medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
Detroit woman says tree fell on her porch, blocking only exit for 4 days
A Detroit woman said a tree fell on her porch and blocked her only exit for four days, but the city explained why it couldn’t immediately come out to remove it.
Rosemary Mitchell says a city-owned tree fell on her front porch during a June 18 storm. She claims she made several calls to City Hall and the police department, but nobody came to remove the branch.
She said after four days with no response, she paid hundreds of dollars to have workers remove it.
Weather: Michigan faces air quality concerns; drier weather moves into Metro Detroit

Michigan EGLE has issued a Statewide Air Quality Alert for the entire state until noon Monday, as wildfire smoke from Canada will push into Michigan through Monday.
