What Eastpointe mayor said to children of manager killed by McDonald’s coworker

‘What happened here is a shock to the community’

EASTPOINTE, Mich. – Family, friends and community members gathered to honor and remember Jennifer Harris, a mother of six who was killed in an Eastpointe McDonald’s.

Harris, 39, was a longtime manager of the McDonald’s restaurant on Nine Mile Road. Police said she was fatally stabbed by an employee during an argument.

The suspect was taken into custody, charged with murder and held on a $25 million bond.

Multiple people spoke during a memorial at the restaurant on Monday, July 14, including her daughter, Mayor Michael Klinefelt and restaurant owner Yusef Alcodray.

Klinefelt spoke after Alcondray, who talked about the establishment of the Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund to support her children’s needs, emphasizing the community’s role in honoring her legacy and supporting her family.

Klinefelt said he was shocked by the violence that took Harris’ life before expressing pride in the community’s response in supporting her family.

“It’s a testament to Jennifer,” Klinefelt said. “I think it speaks volumes to see the amount of people who are showing up with support.”

He went on to reassure Harris’ children, who he said they don’t need to be strong and that they can rely on the community for help and support.

“I know that our police department is there for your family, whatever you guys need and they will do everything they can to help you in the situation,” Klinefelt said. “I’d like you to look around and just think, right now, you don’t have to be strong. That you should be able to lean on our community around you. We’re here for you, the community’s here for you and anything that you need, we’re there for you.”
