DETROIT – An event is planned for Wednesday in response to the murder of a McDonald’s manager who police say was killed by an employee at the restaurant in Eastpointe.
Jennifer Harris, 39, was a manager at the McDonald’s at 17921 East 9 Mile Road in Eastpointe. Police said she was killed July 10 after an argument with another worker, Afeni Badu Muhammad.
Muhammad, 26, of Eastpointe, is accused of leaving the restaurant and then returning to stab Harris multiple times. She is charged with first-degree murder.
Harris had six children, including Antonia Griffin, who spoke during a vigil at the McDonald’s on Monday.
It’s hard to sit right here, stand right here and talk about her,“ Griffin said. ”I never-- This was never a thought. We never got to none of this. Never even discussed death or what would happen when she was not here with us."
Dr. Tenisia Evans, the pastor of Divine Restoration Ministries, helped Harris’ children hold that vigil, which included a balloon release and comments from Eastpointe’s mayor and the owner of the McDonald’s.
Wednesday’s event
Now, Evans, as the president of the S.A.V.E.D. Initiative, is hosting another event -- a “NO Violence Rally” at Divine Restoration Ministries.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The church is at 16392 Harper Avenue in Detroit.
“The rally will serve as both a call to action and a time of collective mourning following the devastating loss of Jennifer Harris, a beloved membrer of the DRM church family,” the release says.
Evans is quoted in the release saying silence is not an option as violence plagues Metro Detroit.
“We must come together to grieve, to speak out, and to fight for peace in our neighborhoods,” Evans said.
She will be joined by Detroit City Council member Mary Sheffield, Pastor Mo Hardwick, Pastor Ovella Davis, and other guests.
Evans will also promote the “Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund,” which has been set up to benefit Harris’ six children.
