DETROIT – Young people in Detroit’s Old Redford neighborhood are making a significant impact this summer, armed with brooms, shovels, and a commitment to clean and beautify their community.
Each week, a dedicated group of young men joins forces as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program at Detroit Blight Busters.
The initiative focuses on keeping youth engaged and productive during their school break while improving the local environment.
“We will cut the weeds off. Sweep the curbs off. And get all of the sand off. Or pick up the grass that’s always left on the ground,” said Austyn Brown, a youth worker involved in the program.
For the young workers, the program is not just about a paycheck.
It’s about being part of something that beautifies their neighborhood and keeps them positively engaged.
Devin Parker calls the experience a “safe haven.” He said the program helps keep youth away from trouble amid challenges in the area.
“It, low-key, keeps us out of trouble. All different types of stuff that be going on around here,” Parker said.
Mentored by committed adults, participants like Brown said the youth workers are growing a strong sense of responsibility.
“It gets tiring looking at all of the trash left on the ground, and nothing’s happening. And it’s a way of making money,” Brown shared.
The community has taken notice of their efforts. Adam Amerson noted the gratitude they receive from neighbors.
“A lot of people come around, tell us thank you so much. That we’ve been needing this. A lot. It means a lot to me,” Amerson smiled.
As tools hit the ground and young workers sweep through the streets of Old Redford, they carry more than just cleaning supplies. They carry hopes for progress, positivity, and a stronger community.
