MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after killing a woman and injuring a man in a random attack in Roseville.
Shane Burns, 33, of Washington Township, was sentenced on charges of first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of felony firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, disarming a peace officer and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also charged as a habitual offender.
Cheryl Ann Parsley, 60, of Clinton Township, stopped at the Belle Tire on Gratiot Avenue in Roseville on May 17, 2023, to put air in her tires when Burns randomly stabbed her and slit her throat, killing her.
After that, Burns attacked a 42-year-old man who was waiting at a bus stop located at 12 Mile Road and Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores, stabbing him several times.
During the sentencing hearing on July 24, Burns’ attorney, Elisha Oakes, said he has mental illnesses, adding that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Parsley’s daughter provided a victim impact statement, which was read by a victim advocate, in court.
“Her death didn’t just end her life, it destroyed the life we had,” she said. “Losing her shattered what was left of me.”
Parsley’s husband, Larry Parsley, died during the trial and never learned the outcome of Burns’ fate. The prosecuting attorney told Judge Jennifer Faunce how much Larry cared and loved his wife.
“This blue-collar, machine shop working guy broke down in tears,” the prosecuting attorney said while recalling what Larry felt following his wife’s death. “That speaks volumes on what type of woman she was.”

The second victim, who was stabbed and survived his injuries, did not show up to the hearing.
When Judge Faunce asked Burns if he had anything to say, he responded, “Not at this moment.”
Judge Faunce described the attack as “a horror movie in real life.” She sentenced Burns to life in prison, “and it’s deserved.”
