CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 13-year-old girl was killed in a shooting at an apartment complex in Canton Township on Tuesday, police said.
The shooting happened at about 12:24 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, at the Ridgeline at Canton apartment complex on Joy Road and Honeytree Boulevard.
A patrol officer responded to the apartment complex within minutes and tried to administer emergency medical service to a 13-year-old girl who had been shot.
EMS arrived and took over the medical scene, but the girl died from her injuries, according to police.
A person of interest is in custody. Police don’t believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.
Police did not release any additional details about the shooting or the person who was taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing. The area of the apartment complex will be closed for “an undetermined amount of time,” while detectives investigate, police said.
During a press conference at 3 p.m., police said they would release more information at 5:30 p.m., but canceled that second press conference due to the ongoing investigation.
In addition, a police vehicle was involved in a crash at Cherry Hill and Lilley roads while they were responding to the 911 call about the shooting.
There were minor injuries, according to police.
