Wayne County prosecutor cites gross negligence

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 24-year-old man is facing several charges in the accidental shooting death of his 13-year-old sister.

Police believe Jay-Veon McKinney was playing with two handguns at a Canton Township apartment on Tuesday, July 29, when one discharged and struck the 13-year-old girl in the chest.

McKinney was arraigned Friday, Aug. 1, on charges of involuntary manslaughter, firearm discharge with injury or death and felony firearm.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said the shooting resulted from gross negligence in handling a loaded firearm, which led to the involuntary manslaughter charge.

McKinney’s bond was set at $500,000. He will be required to wear a home confinement tether and not possess any weapons. His next court date is Aug. 14.
