DETROIT – Two people were killed and one person was taken into custody Thursday in a shooting that involved two gunmen, Detroit police said.
Deputy Chief Arnold Williams and Chief Todd Bettison, of the Detroit Police Department, spoke Thursday afternoon about a shooting that happened at 10:57 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025, on Detroit’s east side.
Police said they got a call about a shooting in the 3800 block of Bewick Street. When they arrived, they found two people dead in the street.
Investigators said one person was shot by a gunman, and then a second gunman shot the first in response to the original shooting.
“It appears it could have possibly been in self-defense,” Williams said.
Police found two weapons and have one person in custody. Police said the person in custody is a CPL holder.
“There has been too much violence in this city,” Bettison said. “Even though crime is down, it doesn’t feel like it, and it has been too much.
“To those groups in gangs, you have my full attention. You have law enforcement’s full attention, and you have the feds’ full attention.”
Bettison told the public that there will be an increase in enforcement, and said that violence will not be tolerated.
