Michigan officials want you to check trees for signs of Asian longhorned beetles -- Here’s why

Environmental officials want you to start checking your trees for adult Asian longhorned beetles because the invasive beetle starts to emerge this month.

Checking for the beetle and the damage it leaves behind is one way you can protect trees and fight an invasive species. Michigan environmental officials are asking residents to take 10 minutes this month to check trees around their homes.

Instagram rolled out new features to help users connect, including one that shows your location on a map.

Meta, the owner of Instagram, announced the new Instagram map feature on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025. The new feature allows users to share their real-time locations with friends.

Assisted living center in Westland announces sudden closure amid history of violations

Management of an assisted living facility in Westland announced it would be closing its doors, giving residents just over a month to relocate.

The facility, which offers assistance through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, was taken over by the company Alcore Senior four years ago.

The company shared the decision at the end of July, announcing that all residents would have to vacate by Sept. 1.

Former Pontiac school security guard sentenced for impregnating teenage student

A former Pontiac school security guard who impregnated a teenage student has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of criminal sexual conduct.

Marcos Rolon-Rivera, 35, a former guard at Pontiac Academy for Excellence, was sentenced this week to 32 months to 15 years in prison. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender.

Rivera was found guilty on June 16, 2025, and was booked into the Oakland County Jail on August 4, 2025. His sentence officially began that same day.

Weather: Sunshine, summer heat and humidity return to Metro Detroit for the weekend

The sunshine has continued the last few days, with some of us seeing a shower or a thunderstorm, and I am expecting that trend to continue looking ahead into the end of the week on Friday.

Expect plenty of sunshine to start the day, and a little more cloud cover to work in through the afternoon and into the evening. We bring in that chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm mid late afternoon through the early to mid evening hours tonight. High temperatures heading into the upper 80s, but once you factor in the increasing humidity expect he didn’t index values to head into the lower 90s this afternoon.
