DETROIT – A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car on Detroit’s east side Saturday evening.
It happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Canyon Street near Balduck Park. Ashley Pearson, a cousin of the 4-year-old victim, who witnessed the crash, said the family was having a family reunion at the park at the time of the crash.
She said her cousin was trying to cross the street when she was hit.
“She kind of looked before she was going to go,” Pearson said. “That car came out of nowhere. He had to have been going about 55 to 60 miles per hour. He was going fast.”
Detroit police said the 4-year-old suffered chest, leg and neck injuries and was transported to St. John Hospital in critical condition.
“It wasn’t pretty,” Pearson said. “It was a lot. It’s traumatized our kids, our little kids to see this.”
The driver stayed at the scene until first responders arrived. Captain Scott Pellerito said it’s too early to determine if the driver could be facing any charges.
“It’s such a tragic situation whenever we have children injured,” Pellerito said. ”We’ve seen an uptick in that, and fortunately, from what we’ve gathered from the scene preliminarily, this just looks like a tragic accident.”
“We are people who believe in Jesus Christ and we’re relying on our faith,” Pearson said. “We’re relying on God’s miracle.”
