Dearborn man goes missing after swimming in Lake Erie

Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, did not resurface after jumping into Lake Erie

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – Authorities are searching for a Dearborn man after he jumped into Lake Erie from a boat Sunday afternoon.

Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, was with four other adults on a boat in Lake Erie on Aug. 10, just before 6 p.m., when he went to swim in the lake.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Hassoun began to struggle and went underwater. He was never seen again.

He was reportedly not wearing a life jacket.

A rescue boat found the boat and the four other people, took them to safety and began searching for Hassoun.

The extensive search was suspended at 11 p.m. that night due to unsafe wave conditions. The search resumed Monday morning.
