DETROIT – Police are searching for a suspect after a deadly stabbing spree at a pool party on the city’s east side Saturday night.
Investigators say the attacker stabbed four people near the intersection of Seven Mile Road and Fleming Street, killing a man and a woman.
Neighbors say the house where the party took place is known for hosting parties.
Family describes victim as kind, mourns loss
The family identified one of the victims as Jakirea Williams, 31, who hosted what was meant to be an intimate gathering of family and friends. The night ended tragically when Williams reportedly lost his life trying to break up a fight.
“With this being so close to home, that was really scary for me,” said Deborah Griffin, a neighbor.
Police say one man is expected to survive, another remains in critical condition, and a woman in her 20s also died in the attack.
Williams’ mother, Kimberly Williams, shared her grief with Local 4 as she prepares to bury another son.
“He was kind. He was kind,” she said. “He was kind…”
Neighbors describe rowdy parties, property owner responds
Neighbors say the home is often rented out for parties.
“It’s loud. It’s rowdy,” Freddie Neal said. “They block up the street, they fly down the street. They have no respect for the neighborhood.”
Alvin Taylor, who shares the property with his wife Diamond Taylor, took Local 4 inside the home, saying the party was a family event that ended shortly before the violence erupted.
“Just unfortunate that they were all together – it was a family thing. It wasn’t like a bunch of young people running around,” he said.
Diamond Taylor expressed condolences to the families affected.
“My thoughts and condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and were affected,” Taylor said. “The safety and well-being of my guests and the community are my highest priorities, and I am cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate this incident.”
The Taylors also shared that security measures at the property are being reviewed and strengthened to prevent future incidents
Investigation ongoing, community urged to help
Investigators say they know who they are looking for, and the suspect is reportedly no stranger to the Williams family.
The Taylors handed over security footage from cameras around the house to police to help in the investigation.
“I want to see him get caught,” Kimberly Williams said.
