Security guard kidnapped, duct taped when group breaks into Hazel Park cannabis facility

2 arrested, at least 4 still at large

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – Two people have been arrested, and at least four other suspects are still at large, after a security guard was kidnapped and tied up with duct tape during a break-in at a marijuana processing facility in Hazel Park.

The break-in happened at 1:33 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at the HP Lab Group processing center at 21107 John R Road, according to the Hazel Park Police Department.

Police say an officer was on patrol near John R and 8 Mile when she saw a cloud of debris coming from a building that was located north of where she was.

As the officer approached the area, she saw a U-Haul truck leaving the area and discovered that a car had crashed into the processing center, leaving a large hole.

The officer then pursued the U-Haul.

“While in pursuit the officer observed the Uhaul cargo door open with a person inside that appeared to her was strapped inside,” police said. “Officers pursued that vehicle through numerous surface streets to I-94 where the Uhaul stopped in the area of Newport and Camden in Detroit.”

The suspects then got out and ran away from the truck.

Two suspects were taken into custody, and at least four other suspects are still at large.

Additional officers went to the building on John R and found a security guard who said he had been “kidnapped and bound with duct tape.”

The security guard told police that he was approached by several suspects who were armed with guns. They pulled the guard out of his vehicle and disarmed him, according to police.

“The guard’s hands and mouth were duct taped and he was put back into his vehicle and drove a short distance away,” police said. “He got himself free and walked back to the parking lot.”

No one was injured, according to police.

About 40 THC vape cartridges were recovered.
