Man who was assessing damage after crash killed when car hits him on Michigan freeway
HAZEL PARK, MI -- Michigan State Police say a man was killed Tuesday morning after being hit by a car on southbound I-75 while assessing damage from another accident. Police were called to the scene located on I-75 north of 8 Mile Road around 3 a.m. Tuesday for reports of multiple crashes. While assessing the damage, a second vehicle crashed into the first vehicle, which then hit the victim, killing him. The occupants of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police say a witness to the second crash said the second vehicle involved was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the second crash.mlive.com
Former Hazel Park treasurer charged with embezzlement
HAZEL PARK, MI – A former city treasurer has been charged with embezzling cash payments from residents. Jo Ann Hubbs, formerly Hubbs-Reeves, is accused of using two checks meant for resident property taxes – totaling $4,656.98 – to pay personal expenses, while in her role as Hazel Park treasurer in July 2018. She has been charged with embezzlement by a public official or agent, $50 or more, a ten-year felony, official misconduct in office, a common-law five-year felony, and embezzlement by an employee or agent, $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a five-year felony. The case resulted from a Federal Bureau of Investigation Detroit-Area Public Corruption Task Force investigation. Her arraignment has been set for this Thursday at 10:15 a.m. in 43rd District Court.mlive.com
4 arrested following suspected road rage shooting, police chase
HAZEL PARK, MI -- Four teenagers were arrested Monday following a police chase that started when officers responded to a reported shooting in Hazel Park. According to Fox 2 Detroit, Hazel Park police were called around 2 p.m. for a report of shots fired. The victims described the suspect vehicle as a 2007 Dodge Nitro that was in the area of Woodward Heights and Couzens. A chase ensued taking officers through Detroit and Warren before the chase eventually ended when the driver crashed on a residential street. An investigation is ongoing and Hazel Park Police are expected to turn the case over to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of charges.mlive.com
Hazel Park K-9 euthanized after widespread cancer discovered during surgery
HAZEL PARK, MI – A Michigan police department is mourning the death of its K-9 officer. K-9 Lando, a loyal member of the Hazel Park Police Department, was euthanized during surgery to remove a mass on Friday, April 2. According to the department, Lando was having trouble keeping food down and when an ultrasound revealed a mass, surgery was required. However, during surgery, veterinarians found that the cancer had overtaken his body and the decision was made to euthanize him. “Thank you Lando for your outstanding service to the city of Hazel Park and many other surrounding areas in your career that was cut way too short,” the post concludes.mlive.com
Police search for driver who left the scene after moped crash in Hazel Park
HAZEL PARK, Mich. – Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a driver who left the scene after a crash involving a moped in Hazel Park. Police said the driver of the Sedan was traveling northbound when they turned left and continued westbound on Nine Mile Road. The moped driver was taken to a hospital and treated for broken bones and lacerations. The red Sedan is described as missing a passenger side window and possibly having damage along the passenger side. I-75 restoration to resume in Oakland County, close lanes through weekend
Road work on I-75 is resuming in Oakland County starting Friday and will close all freeway lanes between I-696 and Eight Mile Road over the weekend. When I-75 lanes reopen on March 1, only two lanes will be open in each direction from just south of Eight Mile Road to just north of 13 Mile Road, officials said. AdDuring the weekend road closure, I-75 traffic will be rerouted to the following:Northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured west on Eight Mile Road to northbound Woodward Avenue, then eastbound I-696 back to northbound I-75, andSouthbound I-75 traffic will be detoured to westbound I-696 to southbound Woodward Avenue, then eastbound Eight Mile Road back to southbound I-75. After the weekend closures, some lane and ramp closures will continue through the 2021 construction season in connection with the I-75 road work. Detroit police investigating pair of fatal shootings, 17-year-old girl among victims
DETROIT -- Detroit police say two people were killed in a pair of shootings Monday night that took place in a span of two hours. The first shooting was reported around 6:15 p.m. in the area of Diversey and Asbury Park. A 19-year-old male driver and two 17-year-old female passengers were in a car when an unknown suspect in an unknown car pulled up next to them and opened fire. Medics responded to the call and transported the girl to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries. Boucher had been under the investigation of the FBI for a while and their findings suggest there’s a clear breach of public trust. Boucher was given a $50,000 personal bond, but he is required to hand over his passport and can’t leave the state of Michigan.

Amazon continues to expand in Metro Detroit with new fulfillment, sort centers
DETROIT – Amazon is building several fulfillment centers in southeastern Michigan. In addition to the previously announced fulfillment center at the old State Fairgrounds in Detroit, Amazon is planning to build fulfillment centers in Hazel Park, Huron Township and Pontiac. Police chase that started in Hazel Park ends in violent crash in Ferndale
FERNDALE, Mich. – A police chase that started in Hazel Park ended with a violent crash in Ferndale on Friday. A white Hyundai Sonata was pulled over by police in Hazel Park for a traffic violation. The crash ended on the Ferndale side of 8 Mile Road, not far from the State Fairgrounds in Detroit. After the crash a man ran across the street and was taken into custody. His passenger ran further into Ferndale and is still at large.
Hazel Park man charged with attempted sexual assault of 17-year-old girl
HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A Hazel Park man accused of attempting to sexually assault a 17-year-old girl faced a judge Friday. Police said 29-year-old Darryl Tellis approached the teen Monday night as she was walking near Hazel Park High School and tried to assault her. Police said the teen was armed with a taser and struck him with it twice. The judge set Tellis' bond at $450,000. You can watch the full report in the video above.

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A 29-year-old Hazel Park man is accused of attacking a 17-year-old girl and trying to force her to have sex with him. The incident happened at about 9 p.m. Monday near Hazel Park High School. Police said the man approached the teen as she was walking and guided her to the baseball field of the high school where he tried to sexually assault her. Police said the teen pulled out a taser and struck the man twice. The man was later arrested at a nearby gas station.

Husband allegedly shoots estranged wife, then self in gas station murder-suicide
WARREN, MI – A separated husband and wife are both dead following a suspected murder-suicide at a gas station. They arrived in separate vehicles at the Sunoco gas station on Hoover Road in Warren on Saturday, Oct. 10, WXYZ reports. Police believe they talked for about 50 minutes before the 42-year-old Hazel Park man pulled a gun and shot the 52-year-old Hazel Park woman and then himself, according to reports. Michigan recalls marijuana product after someone licked pre-rolls during assembly
The Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) announced Thursday a recall on contaminated pre-rolls from retail outlets at Bay City, Hazel Park, Detroit, Traverse City, Ann Arbor, Lansing, River Rouge, Ferndale, Quincy, Lowell, Negaunee and Lapeer. According to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), the investigation was initiated on July 31. Consumers who have any of the contaminated pre-rolls in their possession should return them to the retailer where they were purchased for proper disposal. Consumers who have experienced symptoms after using these products should report their symptoms and product use to their physician. Consumers are also asked to report any adverse product reactions to the MRA via email at MRA-Enforcement@michigan.gov or call 517-284-8599.

Detroit man charged in double fatal car crash
DETROIT Detroit resident Shawn A. Patterson, 22, has been charged in connection with a fatal car crash that killed two people. The victims are 26-year-old Hazel Park resident Leon Freeman and 33-year-old Detroit resident Teon Williams. Police and medics arrived at the crash scene and the two victims were dead. The suspect has been charged with two counts each of reckless driving causing death; failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death and moving violation causing death. Fatal car crashes have increased exponentially over the past year, most as a result of carelessness, recklessness, or gross negligence by the driver that caused the event.

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – The vehicle of a Ferndale resident trying to flee police Friday was shot at by an officer. The driver of the vehicle was alone when the Hazel Park officer approached her. Another female officer observed the vehicle pull into a residential driveway on Carlisle south of Woodward Heights. When the officer approached the vehicle from the back, the driver started reversing. A third officer arrived and followed the vehicle to W. Woodward Heights and N. Chrysler Service Drive.

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A Hazel Park man is accused of strangling his wife to death -- because she accused him of cheating on her -- and then sleeping with her body in the bed for a week, police said. Police officers and firefighters went to the home and found Klepsch, 64, dead in her bed. The Hazel Park police chief said Sherwood admitted to striking, kicking and strangling his wife. They had been arguing because Klepsch accused him of infidelity, according to authorities. Sherwood was arraigned Monday at 43rd District Court in Hazel Park on charges on a first-degree murder charge.

Controversial program monitors student activity on computers to prevent bullying, violence, suicides
HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A controversial new program that tracks and monitors every move students make on their computers is becoming more prominent in schools. The program is called “Gaggle,” and its goal is to prevent bullying, violence and suicides. The software works by looking for bullying, violence or suicidal thoughts and notifying administrators when it flags a problem. But Gaggle officials say the program looks at school computers and accounts, not personal ones. Gaggle officials said the program prevented 722 suicides last year.

LANSING, Mich. – Preliminary test results from drinking water and groundwater announced Friday indicate that contamination from the polluted Madison Heights Electro-Plating Services facility are neither impacting drinking water nor moving southward from the site. Test results from Madison Heights municipal water released this morning show no contaminants exceeding drinking water standards, a consultant for the city reported. Initial soil and surface water testing showed no evidence that contaminants were dumped on the property. Officials also discussed logistics for a public informational briefing on the Electro-Plating Services emergency response in Madison Heights that is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3. Hazel Park man sentenced for production and distribution of child porn

(WDIV)OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. - A Hazel Park man who pleaded guilty in late July to producing and distributing child pornography was sentenced earlier this week to six to 20 years in prison by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Leo Bowman, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Friday. Matthew Dimitrie, 37, was charged in February and pleaded guilty to one count of Production of Child Sexually Abusive Material (CSAM), a 20-year felony, and one count of Distribution of CSAM, a four-year felony. A search warrant was subsequently executed on Dimitries home and his cell phone was seized, which contained substantiating evidence.
