Metro Detroit officers offer safety tips as students return to class for fall semester

Local law enforcement is working with school districts to address concerns about threats to school safety

As the new school year begins across Metro Detroit, safety remains a top priority for families, students, and local law enforcement.

Several officers are sharing important tips and advice to ensure a smooth and safe start to the academic year.

Stay Alert in School Safety Zones

Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington emphasizes the importance of vigilance in and around school safety zones.

“People are out driving. Sometimes they are distracted while they are driving,” said Washington. “We have to make sure that our kids are paying close attention to the crossing zones.”

Drivers: Be Patient and Cautious

Traffic congestion around schools is often heavy during drop-off and pick-up times. Detective Sergeant Michael Murphy of the Southgate Police Department urges drivers to exercise patience and caution.

“There’s always monster congestion in traffic areas around our schools. Take your time. Go slow. Be aware of kids that do run out in between cars,” Washington advised.

Teach Children About Stranger Danger

Sheriff Washington also reminds students and parents that “stranger danger is real.” Students need to be situationally aware and avoid following or listening to anyone they do not know and trust.

Zero Tolerance for School Threats

Local law enforcement agencies are working closely with school districts to address concerns about threats to school safety.

Detective Sergeant Murphy stresses that any statements about harming others or possessing weapons cannot be taken lightly.

“Just making statements that they probably don’t mean, something along the lines of ‘I’m going to harm someone,’ ‘I’m going to kill someone,’ or ‘I have a gun,’ or there’s toy guns, things along those lines, it’s something that’s huge and something we can’t look past,” said Detective Sergeant Murphy.

Gun Safety and Secure Storage

Weapons have been an issue on some school campuses in the past, prompting officers to remind gun owners to keep firearms locked and out of children’s reach.

“We do have gun locks that are readily available,” said Murphy. “If anybody needs a gun lock, you can come here, we’ll give one for free.”
