DETROIT – The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim has successfully completed its 411-mile journey across Michigan, symbolically tracing the route of the famous freighter that sank in Lake Superior in 1975.
Though the relay took one day longer than planned, the swimmers finished the route on Wednesday (Aug. 27) at the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle.
The month-long swim began near the Fitzgerald shipwreck site.
The finish was met with applause, including from family members of the Fitzgerald sailors, honoring the memory of those lost in the tragedy.
