DETROIT – A new coffee shop is opening in Detroit’s New Center area this weekend.

Saturn Coffee will open on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, at 700 Seward Avenue in The Abington, a historic apartment building. Located just a few streets from the Fisher Building, it will serve homemade biscuits and espresso tonics alongside classic coffee drinks.

“Detroit is our home. The sense of community and creativity in the city inspires us. We’re so excited to add to the fabric of Detroit and plant our business’s roots here,” said Chris and Sarah Welch, the husband-and-wife duo behind Saturn Coffee. “Whether you’re stopping in for a caffeinated pick-me-up, a work meeting or just to catch up with friends, we want to create a friendly space where all feel welcomed.”

The pair, who have been avid home brewers, seriously started working toward opening their own coffee shop when businesses were reopening after the pandemic shutdown.

“In 2021, we were living in Corktown and talking with each other one evening about how we were excited for things to really open up again after COVID restrictions lifted and how great it would be for more coffee shops to open in our neighborhood, when we looked at each other and said ‘Wait, what if we were the people to open a shop that others got excited for?’ Chris said. ”From then, we started putting together a serious plan and started working towards our dream, Saturn.”

At Saturn Coffee, guests will find classic items typically found on coffee shop menus, along with a variety of specialty drinks with options that include espresso poured over tonic water, Mexican Coca-Cola or ginger beer. The beans they use are locally roasted at Hyperion Coffee Co. in Ypsilanti.

The duo draws inspiration from flavor profiles they don’t usually see. They hope to bring “interesting combinations and experiences that will be a delicious treat for those looking for something a little different,” according to Chris.

Customers can also get biscuits that are baked at the shop daily, and build their own biscuit sandwiches. Other locally made baked goods will also be available. To take a peek at Saturn Coffee’s menu, click here.

Turning the space inside the historic apartment building into a coffee shop proved to be a “long and arduous process” for the team.

“The buildout took a little longer than we had planned, but we can’t wait for our guests to see Saturn in person,” Chris told Local 4. “The space is so playful and welcoming, you feel a burst of energy and inspiration when you walk in.”

They designed Saturn Coffee in collaboration with Detroit-based architects Chelsea Hyduk and Chris Johnson, and Surfing Cowboy Studio, a millwork and furniture studio also based in the city.

The team is especially excited for guests to see the green-stained feature table in the shop’s bay window, which is placed under a “spacey light fixture loaded with plants and draping vines.”

“We think it is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a delicious biscuit and your favorite drink,” Chris said.

The Saturn Coffee team emphasized the importance of “supporting and reinvesting” in the local community when talking about the various businesses they collaborated with to bring their coffee shop to life.

“We love Detroit and the community here,” Chris said. “As residents and now business owners, it is important to us to support and reinvest in the community around us. But honestly, when we were looking at options for our partnerships, the local options were simply the best for us. The area attracts so many talented people who provide high-quality products and services; it was a no-brainer to decide to work with our local partners and we couldn’t be happier with the results.”

The new spot also features a pet-friendly outdoor patio and has bike racks for customers to use. Free parking is also available on Seward and other surrounding streets.

Saturn Coffee will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Online ordering and pickup will also be available. For more information, visit here.
