Detroit park project faces setback as thieves steal newly installed fence. Twice.

The grassroots group is fundraising to line the park with decorative boulders, making the space more welcoming

DETROIT – On Detroit’s west side, members of the Desoto Ellsworth Block Association (DEBA) are turning vacant lots into a neighborhood park — and refusing to be deterred after thieves stole newly installed fencing.

The grassroots group is now fundraising to line the park with decorative boulders, making the space safer and more welcoming.

DEBA’s event coordinator, Cecelia Dillard, says the group is small but focused.

“We’re a small group, but we’re mighty,” said Dillard.

The association’s goal is straightforward: to revitalize the neighborhood by focusing on resources and projects that enhance the quality of life for all its neighbors.

“We just want to build our community back up, draw more homeowners, draw more businesses, and resources to this neighborhood,” Dillard said.

Using a neighborhood beautification grant, the block association purchased fencing to line the D.E.B.A. Community Park.

Shortly after the group installed fencing around the park, portions of it were stolen.

“Maybe about a month after we got the fence up, someone came, and they stole one portion of the fence. Three or four days later, they came back and they stole another portion,” Dillard said.

Rather than give up, DEBA launched a fundraising campaign to purchase decorative boulders to line the perimeter of the park.

Boulders are harder to remove than fencing, but they will also add visual appeal.

DEBA is expanding the park by acquiring additional lots, and members take pride in the progress.

“It just makes you feel really good about your community and your accomplishments,” Dillard said.

DEBA estimates the cost of lining the park with boulders at approximately $15,000.

“We’re moving forward, it’s not stopping us,” Dillard said.

Residents and supporters who want to donate to help purchase the decorative boulders can send funds via Zelle to debawebel@gmail.com.
