Police capture escaped inmate after tip from quick-thinking resident in Wayne County

Man was already on probation for robbery

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A search for an escaped prisoner turned into an eventful day for residents in the Inkster and Garden City area who were on edge.

Antonio Hollingsworth escaped police custody at Garden City Hospital on Tuesday (Sept. 2) morning following an accident with a motorcyclist who has since passed away.

“He was taken to the hospital for some unrelated medical issues. While he was up there, he was able to get out of the handcuffs and leave the hospital,” said Commander Shawn Vargo with the Inkster Police Department.

Hollingsworth was already on probation for robbery.

From there, a manhunt began with cops in the area telling everyone to be on the lookout.

That’s when a mechanic at the gas station at the intersection of Ford and Inkster roads noticed something strange about a customer passing by.

“He was shirtless and had no shoes. Lo and behold, he comes right in front of me and my son, asking me for money to get a t-shirt,” said the man.

After someone gives him the money, the cell phone video shows that Hollingsworth thinks he has fooled everyone by changing his shirt, but it doesn’t take long for officers to take him into custody after our Good Samaritan calls 911.

“Then he started walking across the street to CVS, and that’s when they got him right there. He came to the right place at the right time, and thank God he’s off the streets,” the mechanic recalled.

Both the Inkster and Garden City police departments collaborated to make the arrest.

“Everything’s good now. The community can take a deep breath. He’s in custody and he’s facing a ton more charges now,” Commander Vargo concluded.
