Developer withdraws controversial rezoning plan after Grosse Pointe Woods community backlash

The wave of backlash from the community was clearly evident in a petition signed by over 700 people

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. – It’s a big sigh of relief for Grosse Pointe Woods residents after the petitioner behind a new project at 20160 Mack Avenue decided to withdraw the rezoning application.

The controversy stems from a proposal to convert an old medical office into a three-unit commercial parcel, which would include a restaurant along with other businesses.

The wave of backlash from the community was clearly evident in a petition signed by over 700 people.

“There’s an awful lot that we can do with that property. We can put up condos. We can keep it as a dentist’s or doctor’s office. But going to commercial has just not been the way to go,” said resident Steve Lawrence.

Residents have expressed concern that rezoning could lead to local businesses being driven out and jeopardize the historic identity of the area.

“We want development that makes sense, development that fits our residents and supports small businesses and protects the historic character that makes our community so special,” Helen added.

Some are wondering, however, if this will truly be the end of the battle.

“The fact that the petitioner withdrew his application is not comforting; it’s disturbing. So now this is back in my hands of the planning commission, and we don’t know if there’s going to be some sort of end around or workaround that’s going to expose us to exactly the same thing,” Christina concluded.

Residents want the planning commission to be more transparent. They hope this can serve as an example of why.
