A Flint man has died after the garbage truck he was driving was hit by a car that was exiting an Oakland County driveway on Tuesday, causing the truck to overturn and hit a utility pole, officials said.
The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, on East Silverbell Road near Lapeer Road in Orion Township.
A 37-year-old Flint man was operating a 2020 Peterbilt 520 garbage truck on Silverbell Road when he was hit by a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The Jeep driver, identified as a 16-year-old boy from Oakland Township, allegedly failed to yield while leaving a private driveway.
The Flint man tried to swerve to avoid the Jeep, but the garbage truck overturned and slid on its side, which caused the truck driver’s cab to strike a utility pole, the sheriff’s office said.
The 37-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
He was wearing a shoulder seatbelt at the time of the crash, officials said.
The teen driving the Jeep was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
The sheriff’s office said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
