MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A missing and damaged stop sign is believed to have played a role in a Michigan crash that killed two people.
It happened just after midnight, Friday, Sept. 12, in Mayfield Township, just south of Traverse City.

According to authorities, a woman driving a white Jeep on Miller Road was supposed to have stopped at County Road 633. However, a crash earlier had damaged the stop sign, which was lying in a nearby ditch.
The white Jeep did not stop and was t-boned by a southbound gray Jeep traveling on County Road 633.
The driver of the white Jeep, a 33-year-old woman from Northport, was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her passenger, a 39-year-old from Gaylord, died at the scene.
The driver of the gray Jeep, a 47-year-old woman from Copemish, and a 15-year-old girl passenger were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive.
Police believe that an unreported crash between 10 p.m. and midnight took out the stop sign.
The investigation is ongoing.
