Repairs underway for Plymouth railroad crossings after drivers’ complaints

Work is expected to be completed by the end of October

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – After months of waiting, work has finally started on the railroad crossings in the city of Plymouth.

“The Farmer Street crossing, Main Street just down the street, Starkweather Street, and Mill Street North,” said Plymouth City Manager Paul Sincock.

Stating this week and through the month of October, CSX will be repairing four railroad crossings.

Each crossing will be fully closed for about a week, and drivers should expect detours and alternate routes.

“CSX will come in with their crews. They will build a new section of track, they will remove the old section of track, and they will pave, and then they will insert a rubberized crossing and some cement, and it should be a lot smoother when they get done,” said Sincock.

Railroads are regulated by the federal government, which means the city does not have jurisdiction over the tracks.

After months of delay, the state stepped in with a $1 million grant to get the job done. Drivers say it’s about time.

“It’s a little scary for your tires and your struts because you run across that, and it’s kind of fear for your car, a little bit,” said one driver.

When asked how they are feeling about repairs finally getting underway, the driver replied, “It’s right next to my office here, so it’s every day, it’s about time.”
