BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – A 53-year-old Oakland County man is facing charges after a welfare check resulted in the discovery of a body.
Officers with the Bloomfield Township Police Department responded to a home on Hedgewood Drive on Saturday, Sept. 27, for a welfare check. Police said they found the “severely decomposed” body of a 57-year-old woman on the couch
The woman’s husband, 53-year-old Dirk Grunewald, was reportedly found in the bedroom upstairs with multiple knives. Crisis negotiators and members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were called and negotiators were able to get Grunewald into protective custody.
An autopsy was performed by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause and manner of the woman’s death remain unknown and are pending further examination, though police have labeled the death suspicious.
Grunewald was charged Wednesday, Oct. 1, with failure to report a death/concealing the death of an individual. His bond was set at $250,000.
