Fatal crash involving semi-truck closes WB I-96 in Livingston County

Motorists are advised to expect the roadway to remain closed while Troopers continue their investigation

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – A pickup truck driver was killed in a crash with a semi-truck on I-96 in Livingston County.

The crash occurred on Monday (Oct. 6) at 1:44 p.m. in the westbound area of I-96 and Mason Road in Howell Township.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Brighton Post are investigating.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2025 Kenworth semi-truck with a trailer was traveling westbound on I-96 when the driver, a 39-year-old man from Jalisco, Mexico, slowed his vehicle and came to a complete stop due to traffic congestion.

Troopers said a 2019 Dodge Ram, driven by a 49-year-old man from Fowlerville, traveling westbound on I-96, then collided with the rear of the trailer.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials said a 42-year-old passenger from Jalisco, Mexico, in the cab of the semi-truck was thrown from the bunk area and sustained minor injuries.

Police said the driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Troopers said it didn’t appear alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing.
