DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi announced his resignation on Wednesday. This comes after he was confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia.
Bazzi announced his resignation in an eight-page letter on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.

“Last night, I was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia. I am honored and appreciate President Donald J. Trump’s nomination and trust in me to serve our country in this capacity. It is with a heavy heart that I now resign from the position of Mayor of the great City of Dearborn Heights. Although my tenure as Mayor began with a global pandemic and unprecedented floods which we had never experienced in our lifetime, I feel blessed to have been chosen during these challenging times to serve the resilient people of Dearborn Heights, Michigan.”
He expressed his appreciation for residents in the letter, saying that the dedication he has for the Dearborn Heights community will remain, regardless of his position.
“Again, the love, concern, and dedication I have for my community will remain, regardless of my title or where I am physically located around the world,” Bazzi said. “My purpose is to continue serving in capacities which make an impact, promote peace, economic prosperity, and diplomatic partnerships, which benefit our Country and enhance global relations.”
Bazzi also listed challenges his administration tackled while he was mayor, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, creating plans to prevent future flooding, implementing new technology and more. You can read Bazzi’s full letter at the bottom of this article.
Dearborn Heights Council Chairman Mo Baydoun has assumed the role of the city’s acting mayor.
According to the city charter, the city council chairman becomes the mayor pro tem when there is a mayoral vacancy.
“I want to thank Mayor Bazzi for his service to our city and congratulate him on his confirmation,” said Acting Mayor Baydoun in a release. “It’s an honor to serve the residents of Dearborn Heights, and I’m ready to get to work right away.”
Baydoun said he will remain focused on several key issues, including public safety, city services, infrastructure and neighborhood revitalization.
“My vision is rooted in listening, acting, and leading with integrity. I will work closely with my colleagues on council, our public servants, police, fire, and local unions to bring fresh perspectives and long-overdue solutions,” said Baydoun. “Together, we will build a city where every resident feels heard, respected, and proud to call home.”
