Semi-truck fails to stop, causing chain-reaction crash on I-96

Speed and distracted driving suspected factors in crash

HOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. – On Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a multi-vehicle crash on westbound I-96, just west of Pinckney Road in Howell Township.

A 58-year-old Wisconsin man driving a semi failed to stop for traffic, police said.

He rear-ended a Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 22-year-old woman from Hemlock, then crashed into a Ford Explorer driven by a 58-year-old man from Lansing.

After the initial crashes, the semi continued westbound and rear-ended another semi from Canada.

This impact forced the Canadian semi into the back of another Ford Explorer and a GMC Acadia.

The 22-year-old Ford Explorer driver was taken to a Lansing hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Wisconsin semi-truck driver was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor with serious injuries.

Two other people involved were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police believe speeding and distracted driving are contributing factors in the crash.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau is continuing to investigate the crash.
