DETROIT – Entrepreneur and philanthropist Djhonia Selph unveiled a completely remodeled wing at the Detroit Rescue Mission in tribute to her late mother, community philanthropist Denise Rushin-Dortch.
The renovation reflects Selph’s dedication to continuing her mother’s legacy of service and commitment to the Detroit community.
Rushin-Dortch was renowned for her tireless philanthropic efforts, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives in Detroit.

The grand reveal ceremony at the Detroit Rescue Mission on Tuesday (Oct. 14) brought together community leaders, supporters, and media to witness the positive impact of the project.
The renovated wing offers improved living spaces and resources for residents of the mission.
The event highlighted the enduring impact of Rushin-Dortch’s legacy and Selph’s personal commitment to upholding her mother’s philanthropic vision.
A wing of the Detroit Rescue Mission of Gratiot received a facelift in honor of Rushin-Dortch, a woman who loved and served her community.
Selph showed Local 4 photojournalist Sara Schulz some of the new resources families can expect and shared how the dedication is helping her heal.
“I know that she’s still here. She was infectious with love and laughter. Her smile would just brighten your day, and she would give anybody her last,” Selph said. “She was so impactful to so many.”
The Denise Rushin-Dortch Legacy Project unveiled the East Wing of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
“This room is to take the stress off. They can make different things,” Selph said. “We went with a lot of electronic immersive features. I want to brighten up their day. I wanted to broaden their horizons, if you will. That’s what I wanted the room to be—very innovative and energetic.”
Selph emphasized the importance of love in helping people thrive.
“Love is the very thing to make us thrive so we can get up, get a career pathway, and be able to support their families,” Selph said.
Keeping her mother’s legacy alive is deeply meaningful to Selph.
“Keeping my mom right here with me and keeping her legacy alive, if I can continue to do that and get fulfilled by doing it and making a difference for somebody else, oh my goodness, it’s amazing. It’s a beautiful feeling. In fact, it’s the thing that’s been saving me.”
