According to the driving technology company, Waymo has already regularly tested its cars in Detroit in the winter to develop capabilities in snow and ice, as well as testing in the Upper Peninsula.
“Detroit is the city that put the world on wheels, and we’re excited to keep those wheels turning with our fully autonomous ride-hailing service,” said Waymo officials in an announcement. “You’ll soon see us around as we familiarize ourselves with the city’s historic streets, ahead of serving riders.”
The 6th-generation Waymo Driver is expected to hit Detroit streets as soon as this week -- but with human drivers. Waymo officials said they hope to have the full self-driving service available in the Motor City by next year.
