DETROIT – A 738-foot freighter was successfully re-floated Saturday, Nov. 8, after running aground Friday, Nov. 7, in the Detroit River near the Renaissance Center.
The Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin was en route to Quebec from Sault Ste. Marie when it became stuck perpendicular to the shoreline.
Five tugboats, Patricia Hoey, Tenacious, Minnesota, Ohio and Ontario, assisted in moving the freighter back into the shipping channel at around 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 8.
Following the re-floating, the crew began conducting safety checks.
These inspections will continue periodically during the ship’s transit to Port Coulbourne, Ontario, where an underwater hull survey is planned.
The Coast Guard is closely monitoring the freighter's transit.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the grounding.
