DETROIT – Homegrown rapper Big Sean turned a BP gas station on Detroit’s east side into a full-blown giveaway and block party Friday. And he brought some backup.
“We’re giving away a lot of gas, making some impact down here,” said Big Sean. “This is my roots right here. I used to come here every Friday and rap at the radio station! If you know, you know,” he said, grinning, as he playfully grabbed the Local 4 mic, going into reporter mode.
And honestly? If you know, you know. It’s been quite a journey for Big Sean. He always seems to make time to come home, and when he does, he shows a lot of love to the city that helped make him.
“We got over 500 cars giving away gas, gave away a couple cars — changed some lives, impacted some people, but it’s the least we could do,” Big Sean said.
“Be kind – love always – we need more love in this world. I love Detroit,” said Zachery Dereniowski — aka MD Motivator — the wildly popular Canadian influencer known for his philanthropy, kindness, and viral moments on TikTok. He joined Big Sean to make it all happen along with Charlie’s Mart.
Big Sean and his crew set up at the BP on East Jefferson near Chene, flooding the station — and the entire neighborhood — with good energy, $25,000 in free gas, hot meals and turkeys and even free cars. Detroit felt the love right away.
“God bless you, thank you,” one woman said as she received free gas.
“Thank you!!” another woman yelled across the BP pumps.
“I love what y’all are doing for the community… continuing to support Michigan,” one woman said between air kisses. “Muah!”
Between selfies, hugs, autographs and words of encouragement, the hometown rapper never stopped repeating how much Detroit means to him.
“God bless Detroit, the greatest city to ever be, and it ever will be. I promise that,” Big Sean said.
And the crowd delivered it right back:
“Detroit Baby!”
“Local 4,” Big Sean said with a smile. “I appreciate you.”
