MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A warming center in Macomb County, where people can go for a warm meal, a hot shower and fresh clothes, is seeking additional support as demand for services increases.
Operating from the gymnasium at Saint Margaret of Scotland in St. Clair Shores, the Macomb County Warming and Rescue Mission (MC-WARM) opens its doors at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. About 100 homeless people go in McWarm on those days.
The facility recently welcomed members of the girls and boys Lakers Hockey Teams as volunteers, continuing their annual tradition of service the day before Thanksgiving.
“It’s a big wake-up call for everybody and it’s humbling, but we’re just grateful to have the chance to be able to help,” said Morgan Hatcher from the Girls Lakers Hockey Team.
St. Clair Shores Mayor Pro Tem Ron Frederick also highlighted the increasing demand for services.
“In a normal year, we’ve given out 150 pairs of boots. To date, in November, we’ve already given out 200 pairs of boots, so the need is great this year,” Frederick said.
The center needs sweatshirts, jeans, boots, socks and coats.
MC-WARM runs entirely on donations and volunteers.
If you would like to donate to McWarm, you can find them on Venmo by searching @McWarm.
The center is also accepting in-person donations of clothing, including outdoor gear and jeans.
Donations can be made on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during operating hours.
