He is accused of killing 73-year-old Charles Barnett, of Pontiac, on April 30, 1998.

Barnett allegedly arrived at his house and surprised Young, who was allegedly robbing the home.

Young then allegedly shot Barnett and stole his car.

Officials said Young crashed the victim’s car a short time later, and Pontiac officers were called to investigate.

After those officers discovered that the car belonged to Barnett, they went to his house and discovered his body.

At the time, police were never able to identify the suspect in the deadly shooting.

Oakland County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Hunt and retired Lt. Steve Troy reopened the case, and now, 27 years later, they were able to connect Young to the murder.

Young, who is a former Pontiac resident, was living in Mishawaka, Indiana, when he was arrested on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025.

“We never give up on our pursuit of justice for the victims, the families and the community,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “I’m proud of the constant review of cold cases that our team does. In this case, we have an opportunity to hold the accused perpetrator accountable after all these years.”
