16-year-old charged in fatal shooting of 13-year-old outside Highland Park store

The 16-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 16-year-old boy from Highland Park in connection with the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy from Detroit.

The 16-year-old is not being charged as an adult, but has been designated as an adult.

This designation allows the judge, upon conviction, to sentence the juvenile as a juvenile or an adult, or to impose a blended sentence with the option to impose an adult sentence if rehabilitation fails.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2025, at approximately 3:43 p.m.

Highland Park police said they responded to a shooting report at a dollar store in the 14100 block of Woodward Avenue.

Officers said they found the 13-year-old in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the back.

The victim was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries.

Investigators allege the 16-year-old fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding the victim before fleeing the scene.

The Highland Park Police Department, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, arrested the 16-year-old on Dec. 7, 2025.

The 16-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 13, 2025, at the Juvenile Detention Facility.
