DETROIT – Dozens of bikes donated by the community rolled out to new homes on Saturday, Dec. 13. The bikes were given to kids and families who need them most, providing more than just transportation.
A bike means freedom and independence, especially in a city where access to transportation is essential.
Marien, one of the recipients, shared his excitement -- “I’m really excited. I always wanted me a bike.”
Today’s event is a powerful example of neighbors helping neighbors. Bob Barnes, executive director of Free Bikes 4 Kidz, explained the process.
“They get to shop for a bike as if they were at a bike shop,” he said. “They get sized for a helmet, so they’re going to get a helmet, and they get to take that bike home today.”
Local 4’s Go For It event, held in the summer, generated about 800 bikes for Free Bikes 4 Kidz.
This nonprofit takes donations and ensures the bikes reach children who need them most.
Barnes emphasized the impact, “You think about the difference that’s going to make in so many kids’ lives.”
Volunteers play a crucial role, making sure every bike is safe and ready to ride. After repairs, the used bikes look almost brand new.
Jeff Carek, a mechanic volunteering at the event, said, “The best part is that when the kids come in today and shop, and you’ll see it in the smiles on their faces. They do not care that this bike was preloved; they just know that they’re going to get a bike that they’re able to love and ride.”
For many kids, the bike is a new way to get to school or simply a new way to have fun.
Christian, another recipient, said, “I’m going to ride around and I’m going to give my old bike to my dad and let my friends ride it when they come over.”
